What is Dance Marathon?

Dance Marathon is an event supported by Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals to honor the children treated there.  The Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals treat all illnesses, and Dance Marathon attempts to raise money in effort to provide medical care in treating patients.  As we all know, the cost of providing the proper care to children in hospitals is VERY expensive.  Raising money through Dance Marathon, we help these children in giving them the hope they need to fight their battle.

All year long, SLUDM raises money  and awareness to support Children’s Miracle Network through fundraisers and events.   All fundraisers lead up to the actual Dance Marathon event, which we invite all students to contribute to and support the Children’s Miracle Network children by raising money.  At SLUDM, the students will honor the children by standing for 12 hours and participating in games, dancing, and other activities.  It’s our chance to show these children and their families we are fighting with them in their battles.

What is Children’s Miracle Network?

CMN Hospitals is a non-for-profit organization that raises money for 170 of children’s hospitals across North America. Funds raised are used to support patient care and services, equipment and facility improvements, and to provide uncompensated care.  The two main goals of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals are: helping as many children as possible by raising money for children’s hospitals AND keeping the funds in the community where they were raised to help local children (http://childrensmiraclenetwork.ca/About).  The total amount Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals has raised up to 2011 is $4.3 billion, and they are dedicated to raising so much more.

Specifically what hospitals will our money raised from SLUDM benefit?

The money raised for this event directly benefits the St. Louis community by staying local, as it is split between SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital, which are both partner hospitals of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals of Greater St. Louis.

Who is Dance Marathon for?

Dance Marathon is for the children treated at Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals; participants of the actual event of SLUDM are students, faculty, and members of the community.

What happens at the Dance Marathon?

There will not only be dancing at SLUDM, but there will ALSO be games, food, entertainment, and guest speakers. Miracle Kids will share their stories of their battles to show us all exactly what they, themselves and the other children go through during their illnesses.

How do I register for the event?

You will register for the event through Donor Drive.  You can sign up as teams to be guaranteed to be in the same group for activities at the Dance Marathon Event, or you can sign up individually and be placed with people at random.  You will have a team leader, who will act as a liaison between the SLUDM Executive Committee and your team!  They will keep you informed about upcoming fundraisers and events leading up to the actual Dance Marathon. Click here to Register.

As a Dancer at the event, am I responsible for fundraising?

Yes. Raising money is the goal of SLUDM to help Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. We encourage that every dancer set a goal they wish to achieve. You will be able to keep track of the money you have raised through Donor Drive. If meeting your goal seems difficult, check out this document here to learn how to quickly send e-mails from Donor Drive! We ask that each registrant send at least 7 e-mails to family, friends, co-workers, etc. to try and reach their goal!

How do I raise money?

Try to start raising money as soon as possible.  Family and friends are always a big part of the donation stage. Let your family and friends know about your twelve-hour commitment to SLUDM and why this event is so important to you.  Talk to them about Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, the children they will be helping and the event itself. If you need help fundraising, contact our Fundraising Chairs, Maddie Wempe and Katie Vaeth (sludmfundraising@slu.edu).  You will be able to send emails through Donor Drive as well!  Additionally, to help with your fundraising, we have formulated a sample fundraising letter as well as an email template to send to your family and friends. We encourage you to personalize the letters to represent why SLUDM is important to you.

If I cannot stay for the full event, is there any way I can still help?

We still encourage you to register and come to the event for as long as possible.  We also are always looking for volunteers to help with various fundraising and event planning initiatives.  If you would like more information on how to get involved in this way, please contact us at sludancemarathon@slu.edu.

Will there be food at the event?

Free dinner will be served to all dancers, and snacks will also be available during the event.

Do I have to stay the whole time?

Dance Marathon is a high-energy event that will keep you busy and moving for 12 hours! Dancers are not required to stay the whole time, but we know you will not regret it if you chose to stay and dance!
